California car accidents: increase in crashes with pedestrians

The weather in California lends itself to a variety of outdoor activities. Many residents frequently walk or ride bicycles to their destinations, whether for exercise, convenience or to avoid the state's infamous traffic delays. In most situations, pedestrians and cyclists arrive safely to where they are heading. However, one county in the state reports an increase in car accidents involving pedestrians.

Police officers report that several pedestrians had been involved in a fatal car crash on a highway in Kern County. A bicycle rider had been hit by a car and was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. California Highway Patrol officers urge all parties involved to be responsible on the state's roads.

Officials encourage pedestrians to avoid walking in unexpected places where drivers may be caught off guard. Another good safety tip is for pedestrians and cyclists to make eye contact with drivers before getting on the road. For drivers, police recommend paying attention where pedestrians are present and be prepared to react to their movements on the roads. Also, drivers would be wise to approach crosswalks with caution.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintain statistics on pedestrian and car accidents. They report that over 400 people will have to seek treatment at an emergency room because of accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians. Unfortunately, the reports show that one pedestrian dies every two hours from injuries suffered in a car crash.

When car accidents claim the lives of loved ones, it is devastating to the survivors. If the accident was caused by the negligent actions of another driver and could have been avoided, it becomes even more painful. Those who have experienced such losses may choose to file wrongful death lawsuits. A knowledgeable personal injury attorney can assist families in the legal process and work toward achieving a successful outcome in the proceedings. A favorable result in a lawsuit can provide survivors with a monetary award to help pay for funeral expenses and provide damages for their pain and grief.
