Claims after fatal hit-and-run car accidents can be challenging

Picking up the pieces after the death of a loved one is naturally a slow and painful process, particularly if it was not anticipated. Some fatal car accidents leave surviving family members with more questions than answers. This is typically the case when a hit-and-run accident was the cause of death.

A 50-year-old California woman was recently struck by a driver who failed to stop at the scene. This occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on a recent Tuesday in Alhambra. The victim was rushed to the hospital but only survived until the next morning. Reportedly, she succumbed to her injuries at approximately 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday.

A member of the Alhambra police says the victim was in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by an SUV. It did not take law enforcement long to locate the suspected vehicle, which was parked at the home of the alleged hit-and-run driver. The 28-year-old driver was initially only facing suspected felony hit-and-run charges, but since the passing of the victim, those charges will likely now become vehicular manslaughter.

Although the surviving family members are entitled to pursue recovery of damages, this is a difficult time in which they will also have to deal with insurance companies who will likely attempt to minimize the value of the claim -- or try to avoid payment altogether. Fortunately, the services of an experienced car accidents attorney are available for the navigation of complex personal injury lawsuits. A California lawyer who has access to the necessary resources and technology to launch an independent investigation and gather the required information to prove negligence can work on obtaining a monetary judgment to cover financial and other losses.
