California car accidents: doctor, wife to stand trial for wreck

When a loved one dies, survivors often seek closure after a period of time to help with the grieving process. This is particularly the case when car accidents abruptly take someone's life and there was no time to communicate after a fatal incident. Some California family members may be a step closer to gaining some closure following a crash that claimed three people's lives in Oct. 2016.

Recently, a judge ordered that a doctor and his wife will be tried for their alleged involvement in an accident that occurred almost a year ago. It was determined that the evidence presented by the prosecution was sufficient to try the case. The judge reiterated that this was not a decision against the doctor and his wife, but that there was enough evidence to cause suspicion.

An investigator from the California Highway Patrol testified and shared video footage from a patrol car that reported to the scene of the accident. Attorneys for the defendants questioned whether or not other potential drivers besides his clients could have caused the accident. There was also discussion about rescinding the doctor's ability to continue his medical practice while out on bail.

The doctor has been charged with three counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, fleeing the scene and hit and run resulting in death or serious injury. He also faces charges of reckless driving causing specific injury or death, destroying or concealing evidence and obstructing an investigation. His wife has been charged with felony hit and run resulting in death or serious injury, accessory after the fact to the vehicular manslaughter charge and the concealing evidence and obstruction charges.

When loved ones die in car accidents as a result of someone's negligence, the loss would be unbearable. A wrongful death lawsuit could be filed to seek compensation for the unanticipated funeral costs and other expenses. Damages may also be awarded for the grief and pain a survivor experiences. A California personal injury attorney can help family members through the litigation process and work toward achieving a favorable outcome.
