Plan a night of safe trick-or-treating fun

In just a few short weeks children of all ages will be donning costumes and begging for candy. Your children are excited. They have narrowed down their ideas and picked characters to transform into for the special, spooky day. You want your children to be satisfied with their costumes and enjoy their night of trick-or treating, but safety is important.

Plan out the route

You can help encourage safety by planning out the trick-or-treating route your children will take. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 6,000 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2015. You will want to talk to your children about best safety practices when crossing streets. Remind them to look both directions, and to only cross at crosswalks. Consider constructing a route for them that is well lit and contains designated areas for walking.

Plan out the costume

You will want to make sure your child’s costume encourages safety. Make sure that your child is visible as night falls. Consider adding reflective materials to their costume, and encourage them to carry a flashlight or glow-stick. Tailor the costume to properly fit your child. Watch for tripping hazards. If your child’s costume involves the use of a prop, make sure that the prop is soft and not too cumbersome. If the costume involves a hood, wig or mask, have your child try these pieces on and ensure that their site line is not interfered with.

Plan for a group outing

You’ve heard the saying that there is safety in numbers, and Halloween is the perfect time to follow that theory. Encourage your children to trick-or treat in groups. If your children are still young, designate someone to supervise the group. Implement a buddy system.

Plan to inspect the goodies

Talk to your children about the importance of waiting to eat the candy they collected until they get home. You will want to thoroughly examine all contents of your child’s trick-or-treat bag. Look for any abnormal wrapping or homemade-style treats. Feel all candy and toys for sharp or protruding objects.
